“We are in a Bull Market, don’t waste it!!!”
Rick Rule
A lot of the time markets are simple. Human nature complicates things. We overthink and feel the need to do something. Right now, as I examine the investing world, I see bull markets all over the place. International markets, commodities, and U.S. markets are all expanding. This is emblematic of an inflationary expansion regime. There are conflicts and geopolitical events, but the underlying trends are expansionary. This is a common stance for markets. Companies, governments, and citizens are constantly striving to improve and become more efficient over time. Because of this, economic expansion is the norm. Companies become more profitable over time.
If this is the case, then why do we spend so much time trying to predict the next calamity, the next market drop, or the next crisis. I think it all comes down to loss aversion. People feel loss twice as much as gains. The way markets usually work is slow on the way up, fast on the way down. Escalator up, elevator down, is how it is usually described. If we are not careful, we will constantly try and avoid the elevator down and never ride the escalator up. This is why I try and design portfolios that are composed of uncorrelated assets when added together can cushion the elevator drops.
Right now, I recommend that we sit back and enjoy the ride. Markets are expanding and we should not miss it unnecessarily.
